Cannabis laws in Sarajevo
Cannabis laws in Sarajevo are the same as the rest of Bosnia and Herzegovina — the city doesn’t have its own separate drug laws.
Current status as of April 2026:
Recreational: Illegal
– Possession, use, sale, and cultivation are all banned in Sarajevo
– Penalty: Up to 1 year in prison for personal possession. In the Federation of BiH, which includes Sarajevo, it’s treated as a criminal offense
– Police in Sarajevo do enforce — cannabis makes up ∼97% of drug seizures in BiH
Medical: Legal but strictly controlled, not fully rolled out yet
On Dec 29, 2025, BiH moved cannabis from “prohibited” to “strictly controlled substances”
– Allowed: Only as a pharmaceutical preparation with a doctor’s prescription
– Supervised: Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices of BiH controls import, dispensing, and use
– Reality: The law passed, but specific rules for pharmacies/prescriptions are still being implemented. You can’t get it yet
CBD/THC products
Still illegal for recreational use. Medical CBD may eventually be allowed via prescription once the system is operational, but buying CBD oil on your own is still prohibited
Key points for Sarajevo
1. No decriminalization or coffee shops — recreational use is a criminal risk
2. No “MMJ card” system like in the US. When medical is available, it’ll be standard prescriptions only
3. Tourists face the same laws as locals
Bottom line: Recreational weed is illegal in Sarajevo. Medical was legalized Dec 2025 but you can’t access it yet without the new pharmacy system in place.
